It is important for us to accept and understand that the messages our brain will send us during this initial fast period are essentially false. Try to get to the point where you see past these mixed messages and continually tell yourself that you are simply in transition and that, on the other side of your fast, your brain will start to return to its natural state of true comprehension of the hunger signal. If you have prepared your body with healthy and clean foods in the run-up to your fast, then you consciously know that you have everything you need to get through your water fast.

It is not uncommon to feel lightheaded, dizzy, and sometimes nauseated during your first fast. These are signs that your body is adjusting to a new way of being, and, as you know, a more natural state of being. This is why it is important to ensure that you don’t have a lot going on when you plan to fast so that you can rest when you need to deal with these symptoms. Due to the change in food intake, you can also expect your bowel movements to change. There is no need to be alarmed if this happens as it should return to normal fairly quickly. If you are constipated, there is a possibility that you are not drinking enough water, and you should consider increasing your water intake. While we are on the topic of toilet habits, it is possible to drink too much water, and the color of your urine is a good indicator as to whether you are drinking too much or not enough water. Very dark, pungent-smelling urine is an indicator that you are not drinking enough water while completely clear urine means you are drinking too much water. Urine should not have an intense odor, and it should be light in color but tinged yellow.

With regards to weight loss, it is important to have realistic expectations upfront. You are not going to get to your goal weight after one round of fasting. When you fast, your body begins a process of burning through glucose, then fat, and it will become more efficient at doing this, the more you expose it to a fasted state. It is also important to keep in mind that while you may lose pounds on the scale, that does not necessarily equate to body fat. The scale cannot determine what type of weight you are losing, and it is very likely that on your first fast, you will predominantly be losing water weight. Temper your weight loss goals with the acknowledgement that you have started somewhere. Even if you do a 24-hour fast and don’t lose a single ounce on the scale, you have initiated processes in your body that are setting you on the right path. Water fasting is not a once-off deal. You need to practice it as a lifestyle in order to get the best benefits from it and that includes weight loss.
